Essex Cycle Scheme FAQ

Here are some answers to a number of questions we often get asked. We strongly recommend that you read the Terms and Conditions in detail before taking the course.

  • What is the Essex Cycle Safe scheme?

    Essex Cycle Safe provides an educational alternative to prosecution. It is designed to improve cycle safety on our roads. The scheme is administered by a company called A2om on behalf of Essex Police.

  • What does the course involve?

    The online course will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You will be taken through a series of interactive e-learning screens which will illustrate the dangers that cyclists can encounter on the road. There is a knowledge check at the end of the course to check what you have learnt.

  • What if I haven’t got internet access?

    For those who do not have interactive access there is a workbook alternative please contact 0845 508 1822 where you can make your payment and request a workbook.

  • Can I fail?

    There is a knowledge check at the end of the course, this has to be answered correctly but it can be taken as many times as you like. If you fail to complete the knowledge check correctly you will have failed the course and your case will be referred for prosecution, the course fee will not be refunded.

  • Can other people do the course voluntarily?

    No the course is only available to offenders who are referred by the Police.

  • Can I pay by instalments?

    No the course fee of £19.50 must be paid in one payment with either a debit or credit card.

  • What happens to the personal information I provide?

    Your personal information will not be passed on to any organisation not directly involved in the operation of the scheme. Your personal information will be retained for 3.5 years.

  • I have input my details for the online course but can’t log in?

    If you have taken an Essex Cycle Safe course in the last 3 years then you are not eligible for another course and you will need to complete the conditional offer on the letter or request a court hearing. If you believe that you should be eligible for a course please contact 01245 452280.

  • What if I don’t want to do the course?

    You need to complete the conditional offer on the letter or request a court hearing.

  • What if the completion date has passed, can I still take the course?

    No the course must be completed by the date shown on the course offer letter, failure to do so will result in you being issued with a conditional offer of a fixed penalty by the Police, you r course payment will not be refunded.

  • Do I need to inform the Police that I have completed a course?

    No, the Police are updated automatically when you have completed the course successfully.

  • If I offend again can I complete another online course?

    You will not be offered a course if you have completed one in the last 2 years.

  • How much does the scheme cost?

    The scheme costs £19.50 including VAT. You pay this money once, when you first log into the scheme. You can return as many times as you wish within your 28 days.

  • Where can I find my login details?

    To login, you will need your Police Reference and your offence date. Both of these will be in your offer letter.

  • How long do I have to complete the scheme?

    You have 28 days from the date on your offer letter to complete the scheme. After this time, if you have not completed the scheme you may need to pay an increased penalty.

  • What happens if I do not finish the scheme within the alloted time?

    You will automatically be locked out and referred back to the Police. You may need to pay an increased fine.

  • I am having technical trouble with the website or the module, who can help?
